Standard ticket, museum pass or special tour

The standard ticket covers the palace plus the museums on St Mark's Square (Museo Correr, Archaeological Museum, Marciana library rooms). It is valid for one day and pays off if you visit at least two of them.

The Secret Itineraries tour leads through offices, the torture chamber and the leaded cells – areas closed on the normal route. Slots are fixed and sell out weeks ahead in high season.

Queues and timed entry

Without a slot you regularly wait 30 to 60 minutes at the Porta del Frumento. Late-afternoon slots are noticeably calmer.

Allow about two hours for the full route including the prisons, or two and a half with a guide.

Combining it with St Mark's Basilica

The palace and the basilica sit side by side and are often sold as a combo. That saves a second trip but locks in two fixed slots – leave at least 90 minutes between them.

If you do both in a day, start with the basilica at opening and keep the palace for the afternoon.
