Venice access fee 2026: who pays, when and how much

On selected peak-season days Venice charges day visitors an access fee for entering the historic centre. It is not an attraction ticket but a municipal charge with a QR code that you register before your visit.

Note: the access fee does not replace an attraction ticket. St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the vaporetto and tours are booked separately – those prices are compared below.

Check and book the official access fee

Dates, prices and deadlines

Who pays
Day visitors aged 14 and over entering the historic centre on a chargeable day
Chargeable days
Selected weekends and public holidays in spring and early summer, redefined each year
Hours
Typically 8:30am to 4pm; outside that window entry is free
Price
€5 when booked at least four days ahead, €10 for short-notice bookings
Booking deadline
The lower rate ends four days before the day of your visit
Proof
QR code from the official portal, digital or printed

Exemptions

Overnight guests
Exempt – your accommodation registers you and you pay the tourist tax instead. Carry the confirmation.
Children under 14
Exempt, registration in the portal still recommended
Residents of Venice and the Veneto region
Exempt with ID or registration
Commuters, workers, students
Exempt with registration and proof (employer, school, university)
Disabled visitors and one companion
Exempt, proof required
Visiting relatives in Venice
Exempt with registration and self-declaration

Where it applies

Applies to
The historic centre, including arrivals via Santa Lucia station, Piazzale Roma and the landing stages
Excluded
Murano, Burano, Torcello, Lido, Giudecca and the other lagoon islands
Mainland
Mestre and Marghera are not chargeable
Transit
Passing through to the station or port without entering the historic centre is not affected

Checks, proof and penalties

City staff carry out spot checks of the QR code or exemption proof at the main access points. Without valid proof you face a fine well above the fee itself (in the region of €50 to €300) plus the fee owed. Keep the QR code and, if exempt, your hotel confirmation or proof ready on your phone.

Based on the rules last published by the City of Venice, editorially checked on 21/08/2026. Dates and prices are set anew each year – please confirm on the official portal before travelling.

Which tickets suit your trip?

Before you scroll the full catalogue: these scenarios cover the most common Venice trips.

First visit to Venice

St Mark's Basilica with a timed slot, the Doge's Palace and a short gondola ride cover the three classics without overloading the day.

Tip: Basilica early, Doge's Palace in the afternoon.

Just one day

A combined timed-entry ticket for St Mark's Square plus a guided walk saves walking and queueing. A vaporetto day pass only pays off if you head to the islands.

Tip: check the access fee first – day visitors are affected on peak days.

Families with children

Short boat trips, a Murano glass workshop and the Campanile work better than long museum tours. Child rates usually apply up to age 12.

Tip: prioritise free cancellation – plans change with kids.

Culture and art

Doge's Palace secret itineraries, Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Scuola Grande di San Rocco spread nicely over two days.

Tip: from three museums onwards a pass often beats single tickets.

Small budget

Many churches and the Rialto market are free or cheap. For paid attractions the provider comparison decides 10–30% of the price.

Tip: sort by biggest saving to spot the widest price gaps.

Skip the queue

Skip-the-line and timed-entry tickets for the Basilica and Doge's Palace regularly save an hour in high season.

Tip: slots between 10am and 3pm sell out first.

Venice tickets: frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions travellers ask most before visiting Venice – from entry fees and skip-the-line tickets to the vaporetto.

Is Venice worth visiting?

Yes – Venice is the only city in the world built entirely on water. St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the Rialto Bridge and the islands of Murano and Burano fit comfortably into a short trip. Visit the main sights early in the morning or late in the afternoon and the city feels far calmer.

How many days do you need in Venice?

Two full days cover the historic centre: day one for St Mark's Square, the Basilica and the Doge's Palace, day two for Rialto, the Grand Canal and a museum. A third day lets you add Murano, Burano and Torcello without rushing.

When is the best time to visit Venice?

April to early June and September to October bring mild weather with moderate crowds. July and August are hot and busy; winter is cheap and quiet, with occasional high water (acqua alta).

Do you need to book tickets in advance to skip the line?

For St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, book timed-entry tickets ahead, especially between 10am and 3pm. Skip-the-line tickets often save an hour in peak season. Each experience page shows which providers offer instant tickets and free cancellation.

How much is the Venice entry fee?

On selected peak-season days the city charges day visitors an access fee; overnight guests are exempt and pay the tourist tax at their hotel instead. This fee is separate from the attraction tickets compared here.

Is a vaporetto ticket worth it?

If you plan more than three or four rides a day or visit the islands, a day or multi-day vaporetto pass beats single tickets. For short hops inside the centre, walking is usually faster.

How do I buy Venice tickets and receive the QR code?

You book directly with the provider using a card, PayPal or Apple/Google Pay. After payment the ticket arrives by email or in the provider's app – usually as a QR code you show at the entrance. A printout is only needed when the provider explicitly asks for one.

What is the difference between the official access fee and third-party tickets?

The access fee is a municipal charge for entering the historic centre on certain days and is booked exclusively through the official city portal. Tickets from Tiqets, Viator or GetYourGuide are admissions and tours for individual attractions. You may need both, independently of each other.

How strictly is it checked and what happens without valid proof?

Spot checks take place at the main access points. Without a QR code or exemption proof you face a fine well above the fee itself, plus the fee owed. At attractions, staff scan your ticket QR at the entrance – no valid ticket, no entry.

Can I cancel or get a refund on Venice tickets?

Many offers are free to cancel up to 24 hours before the start; we flag this in every provider table. Non-refundable timed-entry tickets are often slightly cheaper. Refunds are always handled by the provider you booked with, not by us.

How does this price comparison work?

We pull live prices and availability from the Tiqets, Viator and GetYourGuide APIs and match identical experiences to each other. You book directly with the provider at the same price – no markup.
