The St Mark's ticket types explained

Basic entry covers the nave only. The Pala d'Oro golden altarpiece, the museum with the Loggia dei Cavalli overlooking St Mark's Square and the Campanile are all sold separately.

Timed-entry tickets with priority access are the most practical option: you book a slot and bypass the standard queue. Guided tours usually combine the basilica with St Mark's Square or the Doge's Palace and explain the mosaics.

Best time to visit and entry rules

It is quietest right at opening and in the final hour before closing. Large backpacks and luggage are not allowed and must be left at the nearby storage point, so allow 15 extra minutes.

A dress code applies: shoulders and knees covered. Photography is restricted inside and during acqua alta the narthex can be closed temporarily.

How to compare the prices properly

Look beyond the headline price and check whether Pala d'Oro, museum access and an audio guide are included. A combined ticket often beats three separate bookings.

The second thing to check is the cancellation window. Many providers refund up to 24 hours before the slot, which matters for fixed-time tickets when your plans may still change.

Frequently asked questions

Is entry to St Mark's Basilica free?
A small fee applies to the church interior; the Pala d'Oro, museum and Campanile cost extra. Skip-the-line tickets add a surcharge for the reserved slot.
Is skip-the-line worth it?
From April to October and at weekends, yes – waits of 45 to 90 minutes are normal. In winter standard entry is usually enough.
Do I also need the city access fee?
The municipal access fee is separate from attraction tickets and only applies to day visitors on selected dates. It does not replace a basilica ticket.
