Gondola ride tickets in Venice: prices, duration and how to book fairly

The gondola ride is Venice's most expensive cliché – and still the highlight for many. Rates are set by the city but vary a lot depending on whether you go private, shared or with a serenade.

How pricing works

The city sets base rates for roughly 30 minutes, cheaper by day than in the evening. The rate applies per gondola, not per person, so up to five people share one price.

Rides booked online are usually shared: you pay per person, share the boat and save considerably against a private booking. Serenade rides with a singer and accordionist cost noticeably more.

Route, duration and departure points

Standard rides last about 25 to 35 minutes through quiet side canals; a short stretch on the Grand Canal is often but not always included.

Departure points near St Mark's Square are the busiest. Quieter stations in Dorsoduro and Cannaregio mean calmer rides and better punctuality.

Common surcharge traps

Extensions are billed pro rata and add up fast. Agree duration, route and total price before boarding – ideally in writing via your booking confirmation.

Rides are cancelled in rain or heavy swell, so pick an offer with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
